Can Veneer Stone be applied to a rendered wall?
Absolutely, applying stone veneers or cladding stone to a rendered wall is a fantastic way to add texture, depth, and a natural aesthetic to your space. Stone veneers offer the look of natural stone without the weight and cost associated with traditional stone construction, making them a popular choice for both interior and exterior renovations.
The surface of the wall must have a wood float finish. For steel trowelled finished surfaces ensure that the surface is mechanically or chemically abraded prior to commencing tiling, in this case. Render should be allowed to fully cure before tiling commences.
Ensure all brick work internally/externally is either rendered or has a flush finish allowing 100% surface bond with the tile adhesive
Here’s a brief guide on how to apply stone veneers to a rendered wall:
Materials Needed:
- Stone veneers/ stone cladding
- Rendered wall surface
- Tile Adhesive
- Notched trowel
- Masonry saw or angle grinder
- Mortar bag or grout bag
- Metal lath (if necessary)
- Wire mesh (if necessary)
- Gloves, safety glasses, and a dust mask
- Sponge and bucket of water
Steps:
-
Prepare the Wall Surface:
Ensure that the rendered wall is clean, dry, and free of debris. If the surface is uneven, consider applying a metal lath or wire mesh to provide a better base for the stone veneers.
-
Tile Adhesive:
Prepare your Tile Adhesive according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The consistency should be thick but workable.
-
Apply Tile Adhesive to the wall:
Use a notched trowel to spread adhesive onto the wall surface. Create a layer that is about 1/2 inch thick and covers the area where you’ll be applying the stone veneers. Make sure to work it into the wall.
-
Place the Stone Veneers:
Ensure you Back Butter each stone before applying each piece to the wall. Starting from the bottom and working your way up, firmly press the stone veneers into the mortar. Wiggle the stones slightly to ensure a good bond. Use a masonry saw or angle grinder to cut the stones to fit when required.
-
Grouting (if you choose to have a grout joint):
Use a mortar bag or grout bag to fill the gaps between the stones with additional mortar. Smooth the mortar with a trowel or sponge to create a seamless look.
You can skip this step to achieve a dry stacked stone look.
-
Clean Excess Mortar:
Once the mortar has set a bit but is still pliable, use a damp sponge to gently clean off any excess mortar on the surface of the stones. Avoid smearing mortar on the face of the stones.
-
Allow Time to Set:
Let the mortar dry and set according to the manufacturer’s recommendations before applying any sealant or further treatments.
-
Apply Sealant (Optional):
Consider applying a sealant to protect the stone veneers and enhance their colour. Follow the sealant manufacturer’s instructions for application.
Tips:
- Work in small sections to ensure that the mortar doesn’t dry out before placing the stones.
- Take your time to arrange the stones in a visually appealing pattern.
- Wear appropriate safety gear, especially when using tools like saws or grinders.
Stone veneers can transform the appearance of a rendered wall, adding character and charm to your space. With careful preparation and attention to detail, you can achieve a beautiful, natural-looking finish that enhances the aesthetic appeal of your home or building.
